Why a Bucket List Can Enhance Your Recovery Journey

The process of writing a bucket list forces you to take a close look at what it is you truly desire, to analyze where you are versus where you want to be. It very well may be the career, children and home, etc., but it may also be something entirely different.

Why Should I Give a Bucket List a Try in Recovery

When you are stuck in the rut of day-to-day life, it can be difficult to get excited about the day that lies ahead. A bucket list gives you a reason to spend that extra hour a day working, putting meaning behind the extra effort because the additional money will be why your dream of ice climbing in Iceland will come true. It can create an excitement deep in your soul and exposes the passion you thought you had lost many years ago.

Another benefit of a bucket list is that it will give you a sense of direction that allow your mind to focus on the target, instead of getting sidetracked dawdling on social media or watching reruns of the Kardashians (I am admittedly guilty of that sometimes too!). It will help you determine your end goal and the steps that need to be taken to get there, keeping your eye on the prize.

In order to truly get motivated you need to know what you really want, and writing a bucket list will help to determine exactly what that is. These goals will then be the root of your motivation. Also, having any sort of list naturally inspires you to want to cross things off of it, whether it is simply your weekly grocery-shopping list, daily to-dos or a bucket list.

Accomplishment gives you a feeling of pride, which in turn builds self-esteem and increases life satisfaction. When you are living the bucket list life, you will be continuously making checkmarks next to your goals, and getting the addictive feeling of success often.

Besides a few random Pilates classes my bucket list is my main form of exercise, because there is always something adventurous on it. Some days will involve training for a 5k race, while others will take me to the golf course attempting at an elusive hole in one.

A bucket list is a bit of an ambiguous thing. It means different things for different people. Some will call them goals, some call them successes, and others call them a bucket list based on what they want to do before they die. In sobriety, it can help to look at your life and think, now what? What you have is lots of time and road ahead of you in sobriety, so it helps to have some way to quantify what you want to do and how you want to achieve the goals on that list.

Resolutions and goals are not just about getting healthier or happier. It is about finding richer, more meaningful experiences on the road of recovery. You may not become wealthy, but you can definitely make some goals to help you budget, enjoy life, and set goals to support your financial situation. Perhaps you want to look for adventure now you gave up those old habits, you have lots of energy to try new things. Think of a bucket list as a personal journey you take towards healing.

This is it. 365 Thought Provoking Questions to Ask Yourself, one for every day of the year written by the folks at Mark and Angel Hack Life. I made it a bucket list challenge to spend one year reaching into the depths of my soul to answer all of these, sometimes difficult, thought provoking questions that are designed to inspire self-discovery, empowerment and happiness. Will you take the challenge?

The security of owning a successful business. My dream is to simplify my life and travel the world in order to check off EVERYTHING on my bucket list. The trick is going to be trying to figure out how to do it while still owning the restaurant that I love.

A blog about a terminally ill teenager, Alice Pyne, who created a bucket list as a way to document her precious time with family and friends. In the process she and her sister are raising thousands of dollars for cancer research and getting hundreds of people to sign up for bone marrow donation. She is the epitome of inspiration.

A random invitation to go on the Playboy Kandy Kruise. A reader of my blog, and fellow bucket lister, invited me to go on this once-in-a-lifetime cruise. After working through the initial fears of insecurity, I accepted.

Still owning Sugo Trattoria, but with more freedom to travel, having a line of some type of food product (& a cookbook), continued growth with my blog, dozens of checks off my bucket list and being paid to write about food, travel & new experiences.

It would start with waking up to a cappuccino and crunchy, berry scone. Then, I would take a road trip to explore the culture of a new town and accomplish a bucket list adventure while I was there. I would then dine at a memorable restaurant that serves creative food and a fabulously jammy red wine. Great music would be playing on the radio the entire way back home and I would jump into a bed with freshly washed sheets, an inspirational movie and popcorn.

Bucket lists help us look past the monotonous or daily grind to bigger and better things. Life exists beyond our self-improvement books and office cubicles. A bucket list encourages you to seek out these new experiences. You have the opportunity to engage with the world, and yourself, outside of your everyday life.

Some people like to share and talk about their bucket lists. That can create a sense of competition and one-up-manship. It can make us focus on big Instagrammable experiences rather than deeper, quieter everyday experiences that create life satisfaction and meaning.

Include anything you like on your bucket list. List career goals, travel destinations, health, finance, or relationship goals. It can be as long or as short as you want. Really, if you can dream it, you can do it.

A bucket list is a great way to organize your life goals and get them down on paper. It can also help you dream bigger and get out of your comfort zone. When you start making a bucket list, try not to censor yourself and write down everything that comes to mind, however silly or unachievable it may seem. Ride in a hot air balloon? Retire in the Caribbean? Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? Write it down! There are no rules to building a bucket list.

Almost everything is better shared. Showing your bucket list to your spouse or family members is a great way to connect with those you love. Perhaps a sibling or spouse will even want to do one or two of the things on your list with you.

My understanding was that the value of elevating your legs was to slightly take a load off your heart after doing extra work. I thought blood pressure has to be higher when standing. This is why in wilderness medicine you can test a patient for shock by standing them up and seeing if their heart rate goes back to normal or stays elevated. Though, to that logic, it seems lying flat would be better than elevating the legs at all. Is there any longterm recovery benefit to this short term reduction in load or should we expect it just to be the acute relief feeling?

As a former elite gymnast and now a fitness instructor and gymnastics coach. Elevating your legs 6 to 12 inches above your heart is beneficial for recovery. This gives your veins time to relax, as your lower legs are the furthest point away from your heart. This is a must, also spinal alignment napping!
